Discussing UK Defence and SME Capability with Luke Charters MP in Westminster

The importance of speed, adaptability, and engineering agility in an evolving Defence landscape.
Last week, PurpleSector CEO Mark Mathieson MBE met with Luke Charters MP in Westminster to discuss the evolving demands being placed on UK Defence and the role SMEs can play in supporting future capability.
With geopolitical instability, rising operational complexity, and increasing pressure to deliver capability faster, the conversation focused on how government and industry can work more effectively together in rapidly changing environments.
Drawing on his experience leading high-performance engineering programmes within Formula 1™, Mark shared perspectives on how F1™ operating principles; including agility, rapid iteration, simulation-led development, and integrated engineering teams, can be applied beyond the race circuit to support modern Defence capability.
A major focus of the discussion was the contribution SMEs can make to sovereign capability. Smaller specialist organisations often bring a level of agility, technical focus, and speed of execution that can complement larger Defence programmes and supply chains.
The meeting followed PurpleSector’s recent national media coverage surrounding increased UK Defence investment and the growing conversation around how high-performance engineering principles could support the next generation of Defence capability across the UK.
